A new study says ‘most Americans’ would support lifting sanctions on Russia if it meant they could vote for Trump
MSNBC – The number of Americans who would support President Donald Trump lifting sanctions against Russia if he had the votes to do so “has been increasing steadily,” according to a new study.
The “most recent survey by a group of leading U.S. universities and think tanks,” the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), says that by a wide margin, Americans “say the United States should lift sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin if he would help curb a range of security and economic threats,” including terrorism, drugs, human trafficking and the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
The survey was conducted in June and July of this year, with 5,000 people surveyed in total.
The study also found that “only 28% of Americans think Putin has been honest and trustworthy in his dealings with the United Nations, while 49% believe he is an autocrat who has abused his power to suppress his opponents.”
The researchers also found the same percentage of Americans would support Trump lifting the sanctions if he wanted to win the 2016 presidential election, while 38% said they would not.
The majority of respondents (53%) said they are “absolutely certain” Trump will win the election, the report says.
Americans are more supportive of Trump’s ability to win an election than Hillary Clinton is of her ability to defeat him in November.
Only 16% of respondents think Clinton will win a general election and another 20% believe Trump will, the study says.
The latest poll comes after a recent poll showed Clinton had a four-point lead over Trump, 47%-46%.
The poll was conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and was conducted July 14-16, 2018.
Trump has repeatedly called for lifting the economic sanctions that have crippled Russia’s economy, but his administration has balked at lifting them and he has resisted a move to use military force against the Russian military in Syria.
